2010 is going to be better than 2009.

We're getting on to the end of the year now. i must admit to being glad, 2009 has been a fairly..... unconstructive year for me personally. (Though if we're looking at fandom related things then it could be considered a good year, I've found several 'new' fandoms and read a lot, written a bit and made lots of new friends). In the real world though not a lot has happened in the last year, the biggest thing being that I am still looking for a job and for awhile there I was practically a shut in. I like to think though that 2010 is going to be the year when things start moving.
In 2010 I WILL:

1. Find a job (one that I enjoy, pays me well and that helps progress my career)
2. Learn to drive (I refuse to reach my 30th birthday, still unable to drive)
3. Have a house of my own (it can be another lease, but much as I like my housemates I am so tired of student style sharing, I want a home.)
4. Pay off at least a good chunk of my credit card and save some money.

When I find that job the rest will follow naturally as a result of being able to afford them again.

Gundam Wing fic :- "Learning to communicate" part 5

Wow it has been a long time since I posted any of this, but I have at last another part of my GW WIP learning to communicate (does anyone even still remember it). Think of this as my late Christmas present to the GW fandom.

Title: Learning to communicate part 5
Pairing: 1x2 with a side of 3x4 and possibly 5xS
Warnings: Yaoi pairings, and the occasional shameless descent into cliche. This fic is unbeta'd.
Rating: R perhaps
A/N: Set after EW. The new administration has found a nice peaceful occupation for the pilots. This part turned into a mostly 3x4 section, I think Quatre just wanted to have his say. Previous parts are available here: part 1, part 2, part 3 part 4 this was only supposed to be about 3 parts long. It keeps growing, I now think it's going to be about 8 parts.

Trowa sighed at the continuing gentle sound of footsteps. He gave up pretending to sleep opening his eyes and sitting up to watch the love of his life in fond exasperation. Quatre reached the end of the room and immediately turned again and kept pacing.

“Quatre.” Trowa glanced over at the glowing clock quickly “It’s 4.15.”

Quatre gave a quick apologetic smile “Sorry for waking you, go back to sleep.”

Trowa didn’t point out that in order for Quatre to wake him he would have had to be asleep in the first place, they both know that already. He stood gracefully and drew Quatre to him gently. “Come to bed Quatre, you’ll find out in the morning.”

Quatre hooked an arm around his waist resting his head against Trowa’s chest, “I’m just worried, I want them to be happy.”

Trowa sighed “They have to work it out for themselves, Quatre.”

“I know Trowa, I just wish I knew how tonight went. What if they argued again, or if one of them went off with someone else?”

“You can find out in the morning.” Trowa said firmly

“But what if….?”

“Quatre. You knowing doesn‘t change anything, dating doesn’t work like quantum physics.”

Quatre laughed “Quantum physics underlies everything Trowa, that’s the point.” He relaxed further into Trowa’s arms then pulled away “Close your eyes,” He waited as Trowa obeyed “Now, I might be naked or not but really I’m not either until you open them again.”

Trowa smiled his eyes still closed “That’s terrible logic Quatre, and completely inaccurate physics.” He reached out to pull Quatre against him bending down to kiss him.

******************************

Duo grinned as Quatre took the seat next to him raising one eyebrow in question “Hey Quat, since when do you take this course? Or are you a figment of my imagination?”

“Duo” Quatre smiled at his friend “I didn’t want to wait for lunch and as you told us all you normally sleep through this class now seemed a good time to talk.”

Duo laughed watching the rest of the class file in “I’m impressed, I must be a bad influence on you. Quatre Winner telling me to talk through a lecture.”

“So? How was last night?”

“I never figured you for a gossip Quat.” Duo leant back in the seat “It was good, I guess. Neither of us liked the party much, so we left early. Walked round talking.”

“Talking? About your relationship?”

Duo laughed quietly “No not really, I told you we already decided we’re friends. Lets see we discussed books, movies and coffee.”

“Duo..” Quatre was cut off as the professor started his presentation “That‘s better than nothing I suppose.” He whispered to his friend before turning to the front with a sigh.

One of the things about being a Winner, learning how to fake interest in people is taught practically from birth, and Quatre was well able to suppress his irritation and impatience as he sat through the lecture with Duo gently half dozing beside him. That didn’t stop him wondering how Trowa was getting along with Heero.

*************************

Heero put aside his book at the sound of the quick knock. He hadn’t heard footsteps down the hall leaving only four likely identities of his guest, there was always the possibility of an assassin though so he double checked his weapon and the line of sight from the door before calling for the visitor to come in.

Trowa strolled in hands firmly in his pockets, Heero wondered not for the first time why he would walk around without his hands free to reach for his weapons but dismissed the thought as irrelevant. He nodded to his friend as he took the other seat also carefully positioned with the back to the wall.

“Quatre is worried.” Trowa said simply as he settled into the seat, “I said I would find out if there was any reason for concern.”

Heero shook his head, “Everything is fine, Duo and I talked about a lot of things, it seems reasonable that friends should know about one another.”

Trowa nodded thoughtfully “Of course, it is important to understand one another in any relationship.”

**********************

Quatre smiled as he joined Trowa, he stifled his impatient questions to walk back to their room in companionable silence. Once back within the privacy of their room though, he lent happily into Trowa before asking “So? What did Heero say?”

Trowa smiled slightly looping one arm around Quatre’s waist “Heero says they spent most of the evening talking, I think you should leave them to sort things out love now they’re communicating with each other.”

Quatre chewed on his lower lip thoughtfully “Maybe, we just need to be sure.” He stood on tiptoes to give Trowa a quick peck on the cheek before heading off to his desk in the corner of the room. “Don’t worry Trowa, Relena and I will manage the rest.”

Quatre smiled slightly as he shuffled through the papers on his desk, pretending not to hear the faint sigh of exasperation from Trowa. He was a Winner and except for, possibly, mobile suit piloting, manipulating people was what he did best. Though only for good causes of course, he’d have Duo and Heero back together in no time.

There we go my GW fix for the next week or so. All the lovely highlander stories at the hlh_shortcuts fest have got me inspired to work on some more of the highlander fic I have been writing for the last 6 months, not to mention all the smaller plotbunnies that are busy hopping around eating all the rational thoughts in my brain. Though I quite fancy doing another chapter of Politics and Reality.... hmm well we will have to see what flows onto the page.

Doctor Who

Possibly the best moment of Dr Who last night was when my Mother turned round to me and asked "Oh, is the Doctor gay?", apparently even she saw the slash potential.... and I don't think she's even heard of slash.

Highlander fic :- "Another Day"

Wee two days to Christmas. Since we've had the reveal, to keep everything in my journal and thus making my index system neat and tidy: the fic I wrote for hlh_shortcuts . Ah this means I can answer the comments I was left on the original post.

Title: Another day.
Author: fractured_sun
Written for: adabsolutely
Characters/Pairings: Duncan/Methos
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 1,940
Author's Notes: This is in many way actually two stories but they are part of one whole. I spent several of the best family holidays on different Ionian islands, including Kefalonia which I used to write this story.
Summary: After a five years absence Methos turns up just before Christmas.

Another day

Kefalonia June 2004

Methos looked up briefly from his book, the villa was at the top of a hill with a clear view out over crystal blue sea, not to mention Duncan Macleod pulling himself out of the small private pool. An excellent way to start the vacation, warm sun, a great view and a generous selection of books. He looked up with a frown as water dripped on him, Duncan flicked his hands again as he stood over him sending droplets of water into his face.

"Are you just going to sit there all day, Methos?" He asked with a laugh "Come join me in the pool."

"Macleod, you're getting my book wet." He complained "I'm quite happy here reading and enjoying the view."

Seacouver 2009

Duncan sighed as he added a stray scarf to the box in the corner casting his eyes critically over the loft again to see if there was anything else he had overlooked. That was the last of it, all traces that Jane had ever lived here had been collected and packed away he would keep the small collection of photographs and return the rest to her tomorrow. He straightened before dropping on to the couch tired, five years over with no looking back.

Duncan groaned slightly at the arrival of the tell tale buzz reaching for his sword, before it melted into the reassuring resonance that signified Methos. That was possibly worse, he had missed him but he really wasn't in the mood for even a friend, particularly not one who could see through him as easily as Methos seemed to. Letting his sword go he stood walking to the door considering creating an excuse to leave before dismissing the idea as pointless, Methos would just be here when he got back. He pulled open the door inwardly cursing nosy 5000 year old know it alls and the interfering Watcher who had no doubt phoned him.

He stared in surprise at Methos as he swept passed him slinging a back pack onto the couch. Methos was wearing jeans and loose T-shirt and somehow looked years younger than the last time he saw him.

Methos turned smirking slightly at him knowingly "Duncan Macleod of the clan Macleod, long time no see. You look the same."

Duncan frowned slightly "You look.... younger."

Methos smiled warmly "Meet Jeremy Temple, student, visiting for the Christmas holidays, he's only 25. He's going to grow up to be a doctor. I thought it was time I updated my medical credentials."

"So he's who you left me for?" Duncan asked ironically "How do you do that?"

"People tend to see what you want, the right clothes and posture a few lines covered or added and they fill in the gaps. Anyway Macleod, are you going to get me a drink?"

"Why bother, you've never waited for me to give you one before." Duncan grinned, feeling slightly lighter in the familiar presence.

"I don't know young people these days, so rude and inconsiderate." Methos smiled as he helped himself to a beer.

"So you're here to stay, are you?" Macleod asked looking at the bag

"For a few weeks, anyway. Jeremy has an apartment and the neighbour's have a teenage daughter. Horrible screaming matches, all because her parents had the audacity to disapprove of her 25 year old junkie boyfriend. Terribly unreasonable of them. So here I am for a little peace and quiet." Methos lounged across the couch, somehow aging five years in an instant. He put his beer down on the coffee table and peered into the box by the side and raising one eyebrow. Duncan tensed slightly waiting for the comment or question, taking full advantage of pointedly finding a coaster to diffuse the moment.

"So where are you taking me tonight?" Methos asked finally

"Taking you, why would I take you anywhere?" Duncan smiled seizing the familiar teasing with relief.

"Because it's my first day in town and you believe in being a good host of course."

Kefalonia 2004

The walk down the hill seemed disproportionately long across cobbled streets in orange glow of the evening. Methos grinned as Macleod pulled him off the road to run straight down the hill like children, stopping at the bottom with a skid as they rejoined the road at a more leisurely pace.

The restaurant was one of several along the same street, at the edge of the beach. The tables were set under an open awning letting in the night sea breeze. Methos smiled at the waiter as the food arrived at their table "Efharisto" waiting patiently for the man to leave before cutting gleefully into the grilled Sea bass "There's nothing better than freshly caught fish."

"Do you actually speak modern Greek, or just a few words?" Macleod asked

"I'm not fluent but I can hold a conversation, it's relatively easy to pick up given a good knowledge of it's roots. It was useful when talking to the doctors when I brought Alexa." Methos added with only the faintest hint of sadness.

Macleod looked at him thoughtfully for awhile before asking "Did the two of you come here?"

"Kefalonia?" Methos asked "No, we were in the Cyclades region, Santorini mostly. I haven't been to the Ionian islands in ages, even by my standards. I lived here once though, other side of the island though. I think, It's changed a lot."

"So, settle the question for me, did Odysseus live here or on Ithaca?" Macleod asked

Methos shrugged "I wasn't living here then."

"That doesn't mean you don't know." Macleod pointed out watching Methos grin. "There's a day trip out to Ithaca, I thought we could go tomorrow"

"On a boat? For fun. No thank you Macleod, boats are occasionally necessary evils not something I intend to travel in voluntarily."

"It'll be fun Methos," Duncan cajoled "I promise there won't be any Monks."

Methos narrowed his eyes "I'll think about it. Eat your food Macleod it'll go cold."

Seacouver 2009

Duncan tightened his arm reflexively over his sleeping partner as he woke. A heavier body than he had grown used to recently, harder and more angular but familiar. He gradually pieced together the clues and the heavy soothing background hum of presence filtered through his tired brain, Methos. Duncan smiled fondly and leaned further into Methos kissing his shoulder quickly before rolling away to his feet, pulling on a tracksuit. He felt lighter this morning, he had never really understood how an evening of being teased and taken advantage of always lifted his mood, but it was something both Methos and Amanda were adept at in their very different ways.

That didn't mean though that he couldn't seek revenge for being left with last night's bill. "Rise and shine Methos, it's morning."

There was an indistinguishable grunt that may have been a death threat, before Methos opened one eye to glare up at him "Macleod it's not even 9, I spent 10 hours on a plane yesterday. I'm going back to sleep, I might wake up after you get back from your run and make me breakfast. And coffee, lots of coffee."

Duncan grinned as his friend pulled the covers over his head and burrowed deeper into the covers "Any other requests for his Majesty? Or just anything I have in my fridge."

"Go away Macleod, I'm sleeping."

Duncan laughed "See you later sleeping beauty."

Kefalonia 2004

Duncan grinned as he watched Methos lazing on the beach under the sun, another book in hand. He wasn't completely sure but he thought this was his fourth this week. Methos looked up at him over the book raising one eyebrow in question, Duncan smiled fondly shaking his head before taking his seat next to him.

"What are we doing here Methos?" Duncan asked

"Well, I am reading and you seem to be trying to distract me." Methos said with a smile, pointedly returning to his book.

"Methos." Duncan scolded fondly "You know what I mean, why did you suddenly decide to bring us to Kefalonia of all places."

Methos sighed putting the book down to one side "I'd hidden some journals here I wanted back, and it seemed a good place to have a break. I need to change identities again, properly this time, which means I need to establish my new identity before contacting people from this one again."

Duncan frowned "So this is you saying goodbye."

"Au revoir perhaps, I'll be back in no time don't worry. I still owe Joe my bar bill after all." Methos smiled.

"And us?" Duncan asked reaching one hand to touch Methos' wrist.

"We're immortal Macleod, as long as you keep that head on your shoulders there'll always be time for us. Live, grow stronger, enjoy mortal loves and there'll always be another day." Methos said with a smile

"Only you would paraphrase yourself." Duncan smiled fondly

Methos grinned "Cheer up Macleod I brought us here for some fun. I'll even let you take me on that cursed boat tomorrow if you like."

Seacouver 2009

Methos woke the second time as the shiver of presence crept down his spine, and sunk back into sleep as he recognised Macleod, ignoring the cheerful greeting from his obnoxiously awake friend. The third time Methos woke was to the much more welcome scent of coffee and bacon. Methos sat up willingly, blanket pooling around his waist as he reached up to take the plate and mug and smiling as Macleod sat on the bed beside him.

"So Macleod, rescue any damsels in distress on your morning run? Or right any wrongs?"

"No," Duncan smiled "No damsels this morning, and I haven't rescued anyone in weeks."

"Ah you're slipping Macleod, you'll have to watch that or you won't make your quota for the year."

Macleod snorted slightly "Well maybe I'll get a chance to rescue someone at the party tomorrow."

Methos frowned "I know I am going to regret asking but what party?"

"Robert and Gina are visiting and they are having a Christmas eve party at their hotel and we are both invited."

Methos frowned "Do I still have time to leave the country? Suddenly loud neighbours seem inviting."

"No, Gina was really happy to hear you would be coming too." Macleod smiled

"But I have no time to find a date." Methos said guilelessly

Macleod laughed "Oh well we'll just have to go together then."

Methos turned his attention to his plate content with quiet companionship. He glanced up at Macleod's face noting the ease of yesterday's tension "So are you going to tell me what happened between you and Jane?"

Macleod frowned tensing slightly "You mean Joe didn't tell you the whole saga." he said with a faint trace of bitterness.

Methos stared into his eyes letting him see the absolute calmness and lack of judgements "Of course not, if you don't want to tell me that's fine."

Macleod sighed heavily "It's nothing unusual I suppose. There have been several challenges recently. She got tired of the half truths and times I was missing, I thought about telling her but, it wasn't right anyway. We had one final huge fight in the middle of Joe's and she packed up her things and left." Macleod half smiled "I don't think I've had such a public break-up before."

Methos smiled and lent over kissing him firmly on the mouth "There'll be other mortal loves Duncan, one's that are right for you, and until and around them I'm here" He let irony colour his tone "and Amanda too I suppose, if you can afford the credit card bills."

END

Snow and trains

I'm on the train down from Leeds, it's kind of fun travelling through the snow, so far it hasn't seemed to affect the train schedule.... I'm rserving judgement as who know what the London Underground or the trains to Kent are doing, my Dad was saying there were hour ong delays yesterday. It is kind of pretty outside my window though, and it's just right for Christmas. It's definitely deeper here than in Leeds.

Drabbles - Bleach and Gundam wing

Gah, I am working on the next chapter of Learning to communicate, I was doing so well and then I moved into a scene between Trowa and Heero. Really can't get the dialogue right between them, probably because most of their canon interactons are full of long and occasionally confusing monologues (surely I'm not the only one who has noticed that).

In the meantime I bring two Bleach and one gundam wing drabble that have been sitting untouched on my hard drive for a while. The first is about the 10th division and the second the 11th (My two favourite divisions). Followed by a drabble about Heero and Trowa.

Reinforcements:

She could barely breath let alone move pain blunting the edges of the world as she stared up at the sky. The giant hand of the hollow descended and she watched her death speeding towards her. A blur and the clash of Hollow against Zanpakto. Her vision cleared and she could see white and black rippling in icy wind, Taicho. Further away a voice she should recognise called “Heineko”. Backup was here, the men under her command would be safe until the 4th arrived, the 10th division 7th seat let her grip on consciousness fade and the world grew dark.

Rules

It was an unspoken law of the 11th ’never piss off Ayesgawa’. If you anger Madarame or Zaraki Taicho they will beat you up, but if you are lucky enough to survive without permanent injury that is the end of it. Although the fuku-taicho has even less restraint she is easily distracted if you remember to carry candy or can point out another of her ‘favourites’. Ayesgawa Yumichika remembers and holds grudges, and Ayesgawa controls the division assignments. A month of cleaning toilets and sparring with Zaraki Taicho would remind anyone not to spill tea on the 5th seat’s clothes.

Miracles

In an unlikely coincidence or (if he believed in such things) a bizarre twist of fate it had emerged that Trowa was in fact Catherine’s long lost little brother. Upon hearing the news Heero’s mathematical mind had automatically calculated the odds of such a thing occurring being 5.4 million to one based upon the current population and the number of orphaned abandoned children on Earth and the colonies, which made their meeting the closest thing to a miracle that Heero had ever observed and he survived a self detonating Gundam.

Eeek where did all the time go

For 2010 I want to stop leaving things to the last minute. It's 1 hr and 15 minutes away from the 20th and I am yet to buy I single Christmas present, to make matters worse I am going down to my Mum's on the 22nd (or possibly the 23rd in deference to sudden surprise interview) and I need to get theirs sorted before then.

I went into Headingley today to look for presents (Leeds city centre on the last saturday before christmas not something I'm brave enough to face) and found nothing. On the plus side I only fell over once on the ice during my walk in and out.

Still enjoying the hlh_shortcuts fics there are some really great stories up and they keep coming.... I have no idea who wrote which one though even the ones that I probably should recognise. I'm suddenly in the mood to write again but can't decide what to work on, would be good to get some more of my GW fics done I haven't done anything on them in ages but I have this mag 7 plot bunny and another highlander fic that I keep coming up with new ideas for. Watch this space, will try to post something fic like before leaving Leeds... not to mention any fics I work on at my Mum's.

snow and mulled wine

It's snowing outside!!!! (duh, as opposed to inside the house, stupid self). So there's snow on the ground and everything looks all white and pretty and christmassy (at least until tomorrow when the inevitable transport failures will destroy the charm of the situation.... you think we could manage half an inch of snow but past experience tells me chaos will ensue). Anyway it's all nice and pretty and we have lights up in the front room and made some mulled wine and bought out mince pies and invited people over, hmmm. I don't think I realised before how nice mulled wine is.... I never really liked it before but it's actually really tasty and warming.

Then there's more highlander fics to read at hlh_shortcuts . I've been obsessing trying to work out who wrote each one, it's so much fun trying to guess. I'm a bit behind in commenting but i'm going to make sure I comment them all including the one I wrote so people can't tell (which is kind of weird, after all what comment do you give yourself?). All the fics have been really really good, intimidating when I consider the quality of my writing but awesome to read.

Tick tock tick tock

Why oh why do I always leave things to the last minute? Points to icon, see that's me now, not very productive "Ooo shiny".

I know several people have had problems getting comments etc, me too. I think. So if I haven't written back to you it's not because I am unbearably rude (though that's true too) but, probably, because I didn't get it. My email inbox has suddenly started to fill up with all the X has received a virtual gift notifications today, all about 3 days old.

Dinosaurs

Was playing around, uploading pictures to my 'scrapbook' thought I'd share some. These are of the dinosaurs in crystal palace park (actually it might be Dulwich park I always get the names mixed up but either way it is one of the park near my grandmother's house). They have huge dinosaur statues positioned around the lake (some of them have been there since I was a kid).

In a complete change in subject, I have finally stopped planning and started writing my hlh_shortcuts fic, I know about time, right?
Archive

Jumping on the growing bandwagon I joined 'Archive of our own' and have been uploading my fics (my 'works' are here for anyone interested). I think I like the layout and tagging and so forth. It just looks better than ff.net (though I'll continue using that too).

All shiny and prettty and new.... Yay

Fireworks

In celebration to some poor scape goat being tortured and eventually burnt at the stake (although 'they' say it's something to do with stopping a plot against parliment) we have been watching burning effigies in our local park. Otherwise known as the local firework display, lots of mud, people getting lost and pretty lights in the sky :0)... we even had sparklers. I took some blurry photos on my phone.

:0) Told you they were blurry, kind of pretty that way I think.
Food and exercise

I have been merrily eating my way through all the junk food in the area for the last 6 months or so, and my weight which has always been on the (shall we say) high side has reached new peaks making me now officially obese (i feel like I should have a party or something after all those years on the edge of it). Plus the amount of crap I eat and sitting around doing nothing all day is not good for me. So starting from the 1st (I know a staggering 4 days ago :0) ) I have changed my eating and exercise habits in a bid to return to a nice healthy weight, and to be able to walk up my stairs without collapsing at the top from exhaustion. At 28 being out of breath after a stroll to the local shop is not a good thing.

Today I went swimming for the first time in ages, an hour of lengths I did nearly 0.9 of a mile (56 lengths to be precise) not great but good. At my fittest I used to do 1 mile in 45 minutes or 2 miles in 2 hours (the second of course being significantly slower). Just as I was congratulating myself on not being as chronically unfit as I thought I was I got out and had to walk up the hill to the station (a 5 minute walk), half way up I'm out of breath.... maybe I am that unfit after all.

Anyway i wanted to share that little milestone and a few things I noticed: a.) If I'm going to do this regularly I need a new swimsuit - one that stays up when I actually move without me having to keep pulling it up. b.) I wasn't the slowest person doing lengths (yay me). c.) if you have an optician's prescription of -10, contacts and good googles are a must if you don't want to be blind. d.) just as schools get out is not a good time to go swimming if you are trying to avoid crowds. e.) not checking times of trains and the time the pool is open before going leads to lots of waiting and wandering around.

Now I have to go eat... apparently that hour swim all but doubled the amount of calories I'm supposed to eat today besides I'm really really hungry.

Tldr: I actually did exercise today and I didn't die

Wow it's November already, how did that happen? I feel like I blinked and I missed Summer and Autumn. This is of course the month where I traditionally start panicking about the fact I have zero pounds available with which to buy Christmas presents, at least not if I intend to also pay for fun things like rent, heat, electricity and food, (crap that reminds me, I haven't transferred my rent yet). Something is bound to turn up, it always does just before the last of what little money I have disappears. I want a decent, stable job again is that too much to ask?

Anyway moving on from that depressing subject, don't know how I even got onto it in the first place....

Have been trying to make a start on my hlh_shortcuts fic.... I still haven't found the right plot bunny I keep coming up with totally crazy ideas, I think I will have to write a load of crack ficlets after this just to get them to shut up :0).

Another writing meme.

I stole this one from lil_1337 cos' it looked like fun:

Give me two characters and a favor (or leave it open ended), and I will write a note from one to the other asking the favor. The favor can be anything, and the characters can be from any fandom or original universe (or combination!) that I'm familiar with. Since this is all about asking favors, feel free to ask for as many pairings as you like.
